Orion Capsule Welded Together

Engineers working on the Orion capsule have welded together the first two components of the capsule, NASA has stated. Apparently, this vital accomplishment took place on Saturday 12 October at the Agency’s Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans.

Orion parts will continue to be inspected and assembled at Michoud until it is completed, at which point it will be shipped to NASA’s Kennedy Space Centre in Cape Canaveral, Florida.  Here, it will be checked out, before being mated with the Space Launch System {SLS} and, finally, launched.

The purpose of its development is to send astronauts to deep space destinations, such as an asteroid and eventually to Mars.  And welding has played a crucial role!
