Keyhole Plasma Welding

IMI {engineering and pneumatics industrial company} has developed its own plasma welding technique which allows for full penetration butt welding to occur in cases where the geometrics of the compornent make traditional welding techniques too difficult.

The problem was first raised by a German customer of IMI when they were manufacturing crown wheels for marine transitions. These wheels are made by two circular metal sheets being placed one on top of the other and separated by ribbing. The problem occurred when it was too slow, the distance did not allow the welder to back-gouge the opposite side of the joint in order to weld the metal sheets to the crown wheel.

This new technique can weld forged metals to sheet metal gears with a diameter of up to 4m.

IMI is currently testing different materials in order to further expand the application of its plasma welding.
