From 15 April to 20 June, Brookdale and Ocean County community colleges (New Jersey, US) will partner to host a free welding training programme for residents of Toms River. The training program is funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Labor to the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development.
The initiative is open to unemployed people with a high school diploma or equivalent degree and will cover a wide variety of theory and practical skills such as industry knowledge, blueprint reading, resume writing, arc welding and welding fabrication.
Upon completion of the programme, all students will sit a certification exam for the American Welding Society. If successful, they will be eligible for an entry-level position in the welding industry.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the welding industry is expected to grow by 15% in the US between 2010 and 2020, creating approximately 50,000 new positions.
